The Better-Header

The Better-Header is a disposable for the roller pump that automatically protects against overpressurization.  It consists of a pressure relief valve (PRV) in a shunt connected across pump tubing.  The PRV is a tube with a thin walled section sealed in a rigid housing.

The perfusionist pressurizes the housing to a desired set pressure by air injection.  This closes the shunt by compressing the walls of the PRV together.  In the animation shown on this page, the set pressure is 400 mmHg.  As long as the pump outlet pressure remains below the set pressure, the PRV is closed.   If pump outlet pressure exceeds the set pressure, the PRV opens, preventing overpressurization by shunting blood from the outlet to the inlet of the pump.
